Job Details

Northern Michigan University is seeking applications for an Instrument Technician in the Chemistry Department.  The position is responsible for maintenance of chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation in the department (such as GC, GC/MS, LC, LC/MS, ICP/MS). Responsible for spectroscopic and other departmental instrumentation. Maintain records of instrument maintenance. Perform regular performance checks on departmental instrumentation. Trouble-shoot instruments that are not working properly. Coordinate with faculty on training of new staff and faculty. Maintain a schedule of users and instrument configuration needs, updated each semester.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s Degree in Chemistry or closely related field. One year analytical chemistry experience with chromatography or mass spectrometry.

Required knowledge/skills/abilities: Good organizational and time management skills. Detail oriented and commitment to strict adherence to safety policies and regulations. Excellent oral communication skills. Basic computer skills. Ability to read and understand MSDS, MIOSHA policies and regulations, NMU chemical hygiene plan, and other written external regulations, vendor protocol sheets, and instrument handbooks. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people.

The position is traditionally Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm with occasional evening and weekend work required. The targeted salary range is $44,000-$48,00.
